How Genetics Play a Role in Your Skin

When it comes to cleansing the skin there are two types of people in the world, ones that clean their faces religiously every single night, and the ones that only wash their faces every now and then with something random like bar soap or shampoo in the shower. It seems as if the ones that are more laissez-faire about their skincare routine are always the ones that have seemingly perfect skin. Why is that? Well, genetics have a huge role in our skin and we’re here to explain why.

According to a Popular Science article that talked with Adam Friedman, professor of dermatology at George Washington School of Medicine and Health Sciences, genetics play a large role, but not the only role, in determining whether you have good skin. Our bodies house around 20,000 – 25,000 different genes made up of DNA, that determine everything about us (including how our skin behaves). It has a large role in having normal, oily, dry, acne-prone skin, and even to the extent of wrinkles.

Properly functioning genes regulate skin cell production by telling the body to create new skin cells when the older ones die. However, when they do not function properly, they can produce too little or too much, causing cells to grow too quickly (creating clogged pores or acne) or too little (cause dryness and wrinkles).

Gene mutation that causes eczema to melanoma, and even acne, is something that can be passed down in the family. Life isn’t fair (lol).
