Botox: Not Just for Wrinkles

When most people hear the word Botox, they immediately think of its wrinkle reducing properties. However, Botox is much more than an anti-aging tool. Botox can treat a variety of medical conditions such as; chronic headaches, TMJ, and even excessive sweating. First, I will tell you how Botox works and then how Botox works to effectively treat these conditions.

How Botox Works:

Botox interrupts the signals between nerves and muscles which results in a reduction in the muscle contractions that cause fine lines and wrinkles. This ability to block muscle-contractions is what makes Botox a perfect treatment to combat against certain muscle related disorders.

Botox for Chronic Migraines:

Botox received FDA approval for the treatment of chronic migraine in October 2010, and sales have skyrocketed ever since. At first it wasn’t completely known why this injectable helped reduce the pains from migraines. However, we know now that Botox blocks nerves, such as acetylcholine, that send pain messages to the brain. Additionally, Botox relaxes muscles, so they become less sensitive to pain.

Botox for TMJ or Jaw Tension:

TMJ or jaw tension is caused by excessive clenching or grinding of the jaw. If the jaw becomes overworked or displaced, a person can suffer from chronic headaches and even sharp jaw pain. Luckily, Botox can relieve the pain by relaxing the muscle thus, making your jaw unable to proceed in the unconcise and uncontrollable action of clenching and grinding.

Botox for Excessive Sweating:

Botox can even help reduce the perspiration of excessive sweaters. Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, can affect daily life. This condition with sweat often coming from faces, hands, feet, and underarms. As with migraines and TMJ, Botox for excessive sweating interrupts and blocks a nervous system process; specifically, the drug blocks the chemical that activates sweat glands.

If you are affect by any of these medical conditions, book a complimentary consultation with ZONA to see if you are a good candidate. Call 480-686-9556 or book online.

Mask Bingeing

The use of facial masks has been on a huge raise in the past year. In fact, masking” has become so popular that there is a new phenomenon affiliated with it; it’s called mask bingeing. Mask bingeing is when people put on several different masks in a row to treat a variety of skin issues. Our own Esthetician here at ZONA has even admitted to partaking in this current craze.

The immediate gratification of facial masks make for more than perfect Instagram pictures and videos. Which might be the reason why they have become the new fad. The increased sales in facial mask products have generated a vast variety of options: sheet masks, clay masks, exfoliating masks, hydrating masks and many more.  Below is a quick breakdown of each type of mask and which kinds we sell right here at ZONA.

Sheet Masks:

These masks are exactly what they sound like. They are individually wrapped, serum soaked sheet mask that form to the face and can sometimes come in fun looking varieties. These kinds of masks can treat a wide variety of skin concerns however, hydration is a typical property throughout most. Although we at ZONA do not sell sheet masks we are all about hydration, especially here in the desert!

Clay Masks:

Mud and black masks has been all over social media these past few months. Again, these masks are just as they sound. They are typically composed of natural clays of the earth found all over the world. Black masks can still be clay but can sometimes also involve some charcoal. ZONA’s favorite clay mask is Revision Skincare’s Black Mask. It’s a non-drying clay mask that deeply cleans the skin, ridding it of impurities and excess oil.

Exfoliating Masks:

Exfoliating masks are to be used once or twice a week to slough off dead skin cells and bring fresh glowing skin to the surface. Although, you should be cautious about high concentrations of glycolic or alpha hydroxy acids that can sometimes be in exfoliants. It’s always recommended to start at a low concentration and work your way up gradually.  An amazing exfoliating mask we use in the facial treatment room at ZONA is ABI Skincare’s Oxygenating fruit mask. This nourishing combination of Vitamin C, Hyaluronic Acid, CoQ10 and fruit pulp will leave the skin radiant, with a renewed glow and luminosity.

Hydrating Masks:

When we think of hydration we think of needing to drink more water. Water can only improve the skin’s hydration so much, which is where a boost of hydration comes in. A hydrating mask if you will. Typically found in the form of a thicker gel substance, hydration masks are straightforward. Their main ingredient usually involves Hyaluronic Acid, which is found naturally in the skin for hydration. ZONA loves our own Bio-peptide mask for hydration in the facial room. Our Esthetician uses this mask frequently this time of year, with the winter and being in the desert!

Regardless of your skin concerns, there is a mask out there for you! Give bingeing a try. I personally like to start with an exfoliation mask, followed by a clay mask ridding my skin of blackheads and impurities and finishing with a soothing, calming hydrating mask!

What to look for when choosing an Injector

Botox and Fillers have become more popular over the years as minimally invasive treatments have become all the rage. With such a saturated market and Med Spa’s on every corner (especially here in Scottsdale), how do you know which place is right for you? We wanted to take some time to go over what you should look for before trusting your face to any ole needle.

Experience

When initially seeking out a new provider for injections, check for experience. Both experience of the injector and the experience that people have had with them. Thankfully nowadays we have outlets like Yelp, Google and Facebook to read reviews about the business we are considering. Do they have a 4-5 star rating? Are the reviews reflecting an experience you are looking for? How long as the injector been injecting? All important things to consider.

Education

Continuing education is a huge deal in the beauty industry as treatments and products are forever changing. By keeping up with continuing education it shows that the medical professional has a passion and drive for being able to offer the best options for their clients. Here at ZONA we do multiple classes and at least one convention every year to stay up to date with the latest and greatest service options.

Certificate vs Certification

While attending classes for certificates can be beneficial there is a major difference between a certificate and a certification. Certification means that the injector or medical professional has studied and been tested on subjects within their scope of practice to be certified. This certification means that they must uphold and maintain certain guidelines and keep up with education. For example, ZONA is very proud of our own RN Injector, Michele Hunter, who is 1 in only 6 people in the state of Arizona to be CANS certified!!

Certified Aesthetic Nurse Specialist (CANS)

As of December 16th, 2016, there are only 250 people in the US and Canada, 6 of those are in Arizona, who are CANS certified. The PSNCB (Plastic Surgical Nursing Certification Board) believes that attainment of a common knowledge base, utilization of the nursing process, and a high level of skill in the practice setting are required for proficient practice in the specialty of plastic and reconstructive surgical nursing. Certification provides professional recognition for these achievements. The Board recognizes the value of education, administration, research, and clinical practice in fostering personal and professional growth. Shout out to Michele Hunter RN for achieving such an amazing recognition!

State Nursing or Medical Boards

Finally, check out your state’s board websites and double check the provider you are about to see. You never know what could be hiding in the details of their license. Reviews are a great tool to use in decision making but reviews can be bought, fake or made up. Better to be safe than sorry. The state board sites will show you if they have a suspension or any other negative action against their license and why.
Now for a little self-pat on the back. Michele Hunter is an RN and owner of ZONA Med Spa. She has been passionately practicing in the industry for over 20 years and has owned her own business since 2009. Michele maintains the highest credentials in her field by continuing education and belonging to several medical organizations. She believes that patient safety, customer satisfaction and results are what makes her one of the top injectors in the country and we are SO lucky to have her!

Top 5 Worst Things You’re Doing to Your Skin

It’s almost 2017 – can you believe it?!l A new year should bring on new habits – I’m talkin’ skin care habits here! It’s amazes me that with all the information out there, people are still using bars of soap on their face! I’m not saying you need to be a skin care expert; I’m just saying we all need to know the basic do’s and don’ts. Here are the 5 worst things you’re doing to your skin and need to stop.

  1. Exposing your skin to UV light

Whether it’s UV rays from the natural sun or a tanning bed (big no no!), UV rays are the worst possible thing you can expose your skin to.  Sun exposure accelerates collagen loss thus causing premature wrinkles. Not to mention unsightly sun spots and skin cancer. No matter the season, yes even winter, a broad-spectrum sunscreen on the face is a must! Not all light exposure is bad for the skin LED Light Therapy is a great way to help your skin stay looking fresh and rejuvenated.

  1.  Going to bed with makeup on

So, we’ve discussed this in previous blog post, however it lands as the second worst thing you can do to your skin. We all have days where it comes to the end of the night and all we went to do is lay in and pass out; I feel you. However, skipping this step causes your skin to get filled with makeup, dirt, and oil. Which then leads to breakouts and blackheads! Cleansing your skin every night will remove excess oil and dead skin cells, which will help you regenerate new ones!

  1. Using soap to clean your face

I didn’t even think people still used bars of soap on their body, let only their face! These kind of soaps, and other normal soap that is meant for your body, are extremely drying for the skin. They are drying because it strips the skin of its natural oils. In the long run, using soap on your face with cause dehydration and irritation. A proper cleanser, ZONA recommends a medical grade one, every morning and night is an essential step to your best skin.

  1. Over-exfoliation

It’s a common belief that more is better, however that is not the case with exfoliation. Using scrubs, peels, and exfoliation brushes everyday can cause damage to the skin. It can even lead to breakouts! Granular or natural forms of exfoliation are amazing ways to remove dead skin cells, and should only be done 2-3 times a week.

  1. Only getting a facial once a year

Getting facials only once a year or occasionally, is not effective in maintaining a healthy skin care routine. How ZONA’s Esthetician likes to explain is it that, even if you are taking proper care of your skin at home, getting regular facials is like the glue that keeps all you’re at home maintenance together. Our Esthetician can take a thorough look at your skin and let you know if you need to pay special attention to anything.

How to Winterize Your Skin Care Routine

When the weather starts to change, our skin care routine needs to as well. While we Arizonians are fortunate enough not deal with blistering and brutal winters, our “cold” season still calls a concern to our skin. During the winter, the inside of our homes tends to be blasting with heat, which makes for very dry air that dehydrates our skin. Then we go right outside, where we get slammed with freezing cold temperatures. Not to mention, Ultraviolet rays still penetrate through the clouds hitting the top of our face and then reflecting of the snow, ice, and pavement, hitting the bottom of our face with a double whammy.  To prevent your skin from dryness, dullness, and cracking, follow these tips and tricks!

  1. Get a Humidifier

Having the heater cranked can cause major skin dehydration. This can leave your skin flaky, cracked, and dull. Getting a humidifier for your house can help add some of that moisture back into the air and your skin!

  1. No Hot Showers

I’m not saying we need to take cold showers here! Just not excessively hot showers. Hot water actually constricts the blood vessels making us more prone to get the chills. Not only this, hot water strips the skin of its natural oils, leaving it parched, flaky, and even cracked. I know that a hot shower feels amazing when there’s a chill in the air but try to keep the health of your skin in mind.

  1. Wear Sunscreen

Why wear sunscreen when there is no sun? Because Ultraviolet ray still break through the clouds and cause sun damage. In the winter it’s surprising extra important to wear sunscreen because the ultraviolet rays bounce off the snow and ice and hit the bottom of your face, while the top is already being hit as well.  If you’re like us and are fortunate enough to live in the valley, we don’t experience the snow. However, it’s that means its sunny every day, so we still need to apply that sunscreen.

  1. Thicker Moisturizer

When your environment changes, so should your skin care products. During the summer our skin is more prone is being oily, so we only need a light, even mattifying moisturizes.  Whereas in the winter, our skin is more dry and brittle, so we require a thicker cream to help lock in whatever moisture we have.

Winter is for friends, family, and seasonal parties. It’s a time where everyone is trying to look their best, so make sure your not skipping some of the most important steps!

4 Ways To Keep Your Body Healthy Inside and Out During The Holiday Season

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and over-indulging in food and drink! While, this is all well and good to do a couple times a year, the excess food and alcohol can really effect a whole host of issues on the inside and out. To combat the glut of this holiday season you need to detoxify and reinvigorate your skin and body. This can be achieved by exfoliating, reducing congestion, brightening, de-stressing, and hydrating.

Reduce Inflammation

Sugar and alcohol are the most pro-inflammatory foods we consume, so it makes sense that we are the most congested around the holiday seasons where sugar, alcohol, starches are in surplus. You will need powerful ingredients such as salicylic acid found in Revision’s Black Mask. We sell a large variety of Revision products here at ZONA and love the black mask!

Brighten

Two of the main causes of dull skin is excessive alcohol consumption and poor diet. Both of which we all know are extremely common around the holidays. Look for brightening, tone-evening actives like Papaya, Vitamin C, and Licorice. We recommend Revision’s Papaya Enzyme Wash, Vitamin C Serum,  or Brightening Wash to treat dull skin! They significantly reduce discoloration, evens your complexion, and leaves you with brilliantly bright skin.

De-Stress

There are endless amounts of stress that the holidays can bring, so it’s important to keep your skin and body protected by de-stressing. Use your favorite de-destressing technique in combination with antioxidants! Antioxidants work to reduce the oxidation process and speed up cellular repair. There are plenty of antioxidants out there to choice from but some of the most common is Green tea and resveratrol (grape seed extract). These specific antioxidants provide phyto-nutrients, flavonoids, and polyphenols; all which restore balance and youth to your skin and body.

Hydrate

Everyone knows how important it is to hydrate every day, but Thanksgiving brings on colder, dryer, and hasher climates. Not to mention all the dehydrating alcohol that the parties bring! Keeping up on your water intake will help you looking bright and dewy, rather than dry and brittle. A daily moisturizer will additionally be extremely benifital to lock in that moisture!

The Many Types of Chemical Peels

Professionally applied chemical peel solutions exfoliate dead skin cells and help healthy skin cells rise to the surface. These treatments allow deeper layers of fresh and untouched skin to be revealed. The result of monthly treatments can even skin tone, clear acne, improve the appearance of aging skin and make dull complexions glow. But which peel is right for you? ZONA Med Spa is here to simplify this picking process.

Obagi Blue Radiance Chemical Peel:

The Blue Radiance Peel is a salicylic acid-based facial chemical peel for all skin types that exfoliates and helps improve overall complexion. This specific peel is great for almost any skin type, if you don’t have an aspirin allergy, and can improve a wide range of skin concerns! You could see instant results in the tone, texture, tightness, smoothness, and brightness after just one treatment.  The Blue Radiance Peel is great for anyone who doesn’t want to invest in little to no downtime. Overall, we recommend 4 to 6 peels to receive optimal results!

Neocutis Chemical Peel:

NEO•PEEL is an in-office superficial peel that combines glycolic acid with skin brightening agents to help minimize the appearance of skin aging and help promote renewed smoothness and radiance. This peel is particularly great for aging skin however, also helps with uneven skin tone and texture, pigmentation, roughness and surface irregularities, and fine lines and wrinkles. Individual results may vary, so sitting down for a complimentary consultation with our Esthetician to see if you are a candidate would be recommended.

IS Clinical Fire & Ice Chemical Peel:

This intensive clinical chemical peel is also known as “The Red-Carpet Facial” as it can be done the day of an event with no downtime! Designed to rapidly and safely resurface the skin, the Fire & Ice peel reduces fine lines and wrinkles, smoothing, softening and encouraging cellular renewal. This chemical peel isn’t for individuals with very sensitive sin due to its intensive properties, however if you have mild sensitively then this treatment can still be for you.

“Brotox”: Some not so feminine treatments

Okay guys, it’s time to come out of the cosmetic procedures closet. It’s 2016, it’s no longer necessary to act like a “big manly man” that doesn’t take care of his skin, wrinkles, or hair. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 400,000 U.S. men received “Brotox” (a.k.a. Botox for men) injections in 2014. This doesn’t include other men that receive facial treatments or laser hair removal.  It’s time to un-stigmatize men partaking in self care, so ZONA Med Spa wanted to talk about the treatments that we most commonly see males getting at our spa.

Botox:

Botox is the number one cosmetic treatment choice of men. About 20% of our Botox and Dysport clients are men, and I personally love to see them come in. It’s so nice to see that stigma being broken little by little. As men age, their wrinkles can cause them to look harsh. Botox can soften those lines without taking a masculine appearance away. Botox isn’t just for women!

Microdermabrasion:

For those who don’t know what Microderm is, it’s a facial treatment that stimulates healthy skin cells by sloughing off dry skin cells. Microdermabrasion softens fine lines and wrinkles, helps to smooth coarsely textured skin, decreases the appearance of superficial scarring and superficial hyper-pigmentation or age spots. This is the most common facial treatment for men who come to ZONA Med Spa because it exfoliates and absorbs products better into the skin. Thus, leaving them with a complexion that keeps others wondering their secret to great skin.

Laser Hair Removal:

As you read this, I’m sure you’ve questioned what hair men even need to laser away. Well, with our male clients at ZONA we often see men seeking to remove hair on their neck, back, and chest. Just like women, men have specific concerns too. One of the biggest concerns we see is the ingrown hairs men can get on their necks. Laser hair removal addresses this issue directly and eliminates shaving completely. Leaving that once coarse, bumpy and irritated area smooth and hair free!

Nobody likes to see the effects of aging. Let’s get rid of the stigma that man can’t have a spa day and encourage all men to join us ladies next time!

PRP: Not Just a Trend

You’ve probably heard of Vampire Facials because of the influential Kim Kardashian, but have you heard of PRP? Well, it’s the same exact thing, just without the familiar name of Vampire Facial. However, don’t knock the PRP facial as something that is just on trend, this treatment has some major restorative benefits! We at ZONA Med Spa wanted to give a simple and clear breakdown of what the experience would be like and inform you on the amazing benefits of our PRP facial.

Why get a PRP Facial?

The internal essence of your blood contains life-giving fundamental protein growth factors designed to restore and strengthen your skin. PRP utilizes a leading-edge patented technology specifically designed and verified for aesthetic applications. Our RN professional will harness an extremely high concentration of your biological nutrient-rich cells and then create autologous platelet-rich plasma. Platelet-rich plasma is a regenerative technology that uses your own biochemistry to instinctively repair and strengthen specific residing tissues. Another cool thing about PRP treatments is that it’s exclusively from you, meaning there is an extremely low chance of having an allergic reaction or intolerance to it.

Overall benefits:

  • Restore and strengthen your skin
  • Collagen stimulation
  • Softens fines line and wrinkles
  • Improves skin’s tone and texture
  • Helps acne scarring

Process of a PRP Facial:

A PRP Facial is a procedure in which the body’s own platelet rich plasma (PRP) is used to re-energize cells and boost collagen production. So basically, this treatment is specifically great for middle aged persons who want to revive their skin.  The following is a step-by-step process to the treatment:

  1. Your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge – this allows the plasma and growth factors to separate
  2. PRP is applied topically to the skin
  3. A MICROPEN is then used to aerate the skin – which is when the skin is perforated with near microscopic holes to allow for the delivery of the PRP
  4. A second layer of PRP is applied allowing for maximum benefit

After the treatment, there is 2 to 3 days of downtime, however you will be pleased to notice the overall tone, texture and quality of your skin will greatly improve will just one treatment. Depending on the client’s skin goals, it may require 3-5 treatments over 3-6 months.

Here at ZONA Med Spa our experienced staff are here to answer any of your questions or concerns and insure you are as comfortable as possible.  If you are interested in a PRP Facial give ZONA a call and set up a free consultation.

SkinBetter Science: Innovation in Every Formula

Recently, the staff of ZONA Med Spa attended an educational seminar for SkinBetter Science. SkinBetter is brand new to the market and we got to learn all about why this line is unlike anything else in the clinical skincare industry. They have strived to reinvigorate and redesign the whole skin care experience; and they have done just that. We at ZONA are very excited to see SkinBetter Science transform the skin, so here is more about this revolutionary skin care line.

The line can be broken down into two categories: regenerating and smoothing.  Rejuvenating is a collection of anti-aging performers that deliver immediate and long term skin benefits. The smoothing experience is designed for line-smoothing and collagen-invigorating. Using them all together only gives you greater and faster results.

Here are the key ingredients and benefits for each product in the SkinBetter Science line.

Regenerating line:

The rejuvenating technology of the AlphaRet face creams is something you’ve never seen before. SkinBetter Science innovated a whole new molecule that significantly reduces the appearance of depth and size of line and wrinkles. AlphaRet is a combination of alpha hydroxy acids, tretinoin, and retinol. In the past these ingredients have been known to be potentially irritating to the skin, however the mechanism of hydrolysis in their product creates a natural “time release” action so your skin is not bombarded with too much product all at once. Results should be seen in as little as four weeks.

AlphaRet Overnight Face Cream:

Target Areas: Lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, and discoloration

Ingredients:

AlphaRet

Minimizes lines

Glycolic Acid

Helps retexturize and increase the performance of AlphaRet

Peptide blend
