Sun Exposure: Causing Your Skin to Age Prematurely

Sunscreen and the importance of SPF has come a long way in the past 5 to 10 years. By now we have been educated over and over again on the importance of sunscreen, yet I come across so many clients who still are not protecting their skin on a daily basis. Consider this: 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Living in Arizona we see the sun almost daily. Even if you don’t plan on laying out or being outside for an extended amount of time, wearing sunscreen is still important. The accumulation of sun exposure through the car window on the way to and from work or running errands, all add up. Besides the risk of skin cancer, using a daily SPF (ideally 30 SPF-50 SPF) is also the first step in preventative aging. Unprotected sun exposure speeds up the aging process causing fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity and uneven skin tone or brown/red spots.

ZONA Med Spa always offers complimentary consultations. We are here to guide you in your skin care journey, even you need help finding the right sunscreen for your skin. As of 2012 the FDA regulated sunscreen to be properly labeled “broad-spectrum” meaning both UVA and UVB protection. Using a sunscreen for both the face and body that is broad-spectrum protection is most important as UVA and UVB both affect the skin differently.

UVA Rays: The Aging Rays

  • Penetrates deeply into the skin, deeper than UVB, damaging collagen and cells
  • Plays a key role in the acceleration of wrinkling, pigmentation (brown spots and sun damage), blotchy skin tone and redness, skin roughening and loss of elasticity
  • Can pass through glass (office and vehicles)
  • Not affected by weather or altitude (meaning even on cloudy days the UVA rays are there)
  • Present all day, every day of the year
  • UVA is 50 times more prevalent than UVB rays
  • Can contribute to the development or increase the risk of skin cancer

UVB Rays: The Burning Rays

  • Penetrates the skin more superficially than UVA, mostly affecting the outer layer of the skin
  • Is the primary cause of sunburns and tanning that increase the risk of cancer
  • UVB varies with the time of day and seasons, and are stronger in the summertime
  • The SPF (sunburn protection factor) number of a sunscreen indicates the level of protection from UVB only

ZONA Med Spa proudly carries Revision Skincare sunscreens that help prevent sunburn and protect skin health. Using a blend of peptides, broad-spectrum UV protection and potent antioxidants, it’s the smart way to care for your skin. Great for all skin types, Intellishade Matte and Original reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, fights photodamage that causes premature aging while moisturizing and blending naturally with the color of your skin. Multi-Protection Broad-Spectrum SPF 50 is also formulated for all skin types. This sunscreen contains a strong blend of antioxidants, moisturizes the skin with plant-based Polysaccharides, Squalane and Sodium Hyaluronate all while providing broad-spectrum UV protection. Thanks to Revision Skincare’s all in one sunscreens, daily protection and antiaging moisturizing has never been easier!

Goodbye Double Chin!

Have you noticed an unwanted second chin taking away the focus from your beautiful face? Is the waddle in your selfies and pictures getting you down? Say good riddance to that awful double chin and hello to the neck you can’t wait to show off! Kybella is the first and ONLY FDA approved for improvement in the appearance of moderated to severe fullness associated with submental (area beneath the chin) fat in adults.

 What is Kybella?

The active ingredient in this treatment is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. Kybella is administered by a trained physician who injects the product under a patients chin to destroy fat cells, improving appearance of the chin area. Submental fullness (double chin) is a common yet undertreated facial aesthetic condition. Both men and women can benefit from Kybella as submental fullness can be from aging, weight gain or genetics.

Often times the double chin area is resistant to diet and exercise alone which is why Kybella is made to destroy the fat cell, getting rid of it for good. Other fat reduction or removal methods may shrink the fat cells or cause a temporary reduction in the jawline area unlike this treatment. In a 2015 study done by the ASDS (American Society for Dermatologic Surgery) 67% of people are just as bothered by their double chin as they are by their fine lines and wrinkles.

What to Expect During Treatment

Having a consultation with our expert injector before your Kybella treatment is recommended. During this consultation she will go over how many treatments you may need to get desired results as the number of treatments vary from person to person. Cost of the Kybella treatment will be explained during this time which is based on how much of the product will need to be administered during each treatment. Up to 6 treatments may be required to see full results. Contraindications, realistic expectations and any questions you have will be answered to be sure you are comfortable and satisfied before getting started.

In the clinical trials many patients had experienced visible results in just 2-4 treatments, although 59% of the patients did receive all 6 treatments. After being treated patients reported improvement in self-perception, including feeling happier and younger based on their own chin profile as well as feeling less embarrassed, self-conscious, overweight and bothered by a double chin.

Whether getting rid of the double chin has been a dream of yours for years or something that has bothered you more recently, Kybella is the way to go! Set up your free consultation today and get started on a new you!

Information in this blog sited from both Allergan and Kybella medical sites.

Not a Fan of Breakouts or Wrinkles? The Crucial Skincare Step You Cannot Skip!

You might think that using a moisturizer every day is a no brainer. Believe it or not I come across people frequently that aren’t using any type of hydration, which brings me to this blog. Here are 7 things that can happen if you neglect your moisturizer!

1. You Can Develop More Wrinkles

The horror! No one wants to purposely create more wrinkles! When you leave your skin dehydrated it leads to low grade inflammation. This inflammation ultimately leads to the breakdown of collagen and accelerated aging.

2. Even Your Current Wrinkles Will Look Worse

The more hydrated your skin is the less the signs of aging show. Therefore dehydrated skin exacerbates the wrinkles you already have making them stand out like a sore thumb. Try using Hyaluronic Acid to help plump and moisturize your skin so those fine lines and wrinkles fade away instead.

 3. Your Complexion Will Become Dull and Flaky

Living in the desert tends to leave us feeling dry for most of the year because dry air dehydrates and stripsyour skin of lipids or natural oils. When this outer most layer of protection has been stripped this causes irritation, redness and flaking. Dermaplaning is an excellent treatment to help with a dull and flaky complexion. We can remove all of the dull dry skin cells and allow hydrating products to absorb more efficiently.

 4. It Will Aggravate Your Acne

Yes, even oily skin needs a moisturizer! Consistently using a moisturizer actually regulates oil production causing skin to be LESS oily in the long run. Acneic and oily skin types tend to use more drying products to dry out blemishes and it is important to always finish with hydration. Without the final step of hydration your oil glands will over produce oil for lack of moisture compensation, making skin oiler than it is in the first place.

 5. You Lose a Layer of Protection

Products like Retinoids, Benzoyl Peroxides and Salicylic Acids can be very drying and give some uncomfortable side effects like redness, peeling or flaking. By not using a moisturizer your skin tries to combat the dry, red and flaking skin versus absorbing the benefits from these products.

 6. Makeup Accentuates Dry Areas, Fine Lines and Wrinkles

When applying makeup after using a moisturizer, chances are more likely for the application to be flawless. Without properly hydrated skin makeup sticks to the dry areas of the face and can even seep into fine lines.  Picture the little lines under your eyes where the concealer creases, but worse.

 7. Your Skin Will Itch Like Crazy

Similar to the tight dry uncomfortable feeling you get right after a nice hot shower, imagine that – all day long. If the reasons above aren’t good enough to keep your hydration on point, just thinking about that awful itching feeling should do the trick. And as always if you need guidance in your skincare ways, ZONA Med Spa is here as your skin guru to point you in the right direction for you specific concerns or skin type!

Skincare Resolutions for a Flawless 2016!

January is here again, the time of year when we make resolutions and rules to abide by for a “New Year New Me.” As genuine as our intentions may be, resolutions are hard to keep.  Waking up at the crack of dawn to get in a workout before work sounds like a good plan, until our alarm goes off and hitting snooze sounds so much better. It’s important when choosing goals to not be too hard on ourselves and to try something simple to keep us on track. Let’s start 2016 off by showing our skin some love it deserves and make it a priority to step up our skincare game this year. The following are rules – or resolutions if you will – that are effective at achieving your best skin yet! A few of the rules coming next may seem like basics, but you’d be surprised how often these crucial fundamentals get skipped.

Wear SPF 30+ Every. Single. Day.

Even though it sounds redundant and preached now more than ever, we sometimes forget how important an everyday sunscreen really is. For the few of you out there who still rely on the SPF in your makeup or are using a daily SPF below 30, unfortunately you aren’t doing your skin any favors. Sunscreen is one of the most important things you can do for your skin. Not only does it protect against sun damage and skin cancer but it is also the foundation of an anti-aging routine. You are never too young to start an anti-aging routine as preventative is much easier than correcting.

Stop Smoking

Let’s be real, it’s 2016 and by now everyone knows the negative side effects from smoking. Besides the obvious ways smoking can harm the body both inside and out, it also increases premature wrinkles and aging. Your blood vessels constrict when smoking causing less blood flow, meaning important nutrients and oxygen are no longer able to reach the skin. Even the repetitive motion of pursing your lips to smoke that cigarette can accelerate unsightly lines and wrinkles to form around your mouth. If you want healthy and younger looking skin, kick the habit!

Eat Better

Again, sounds like a no brainer. We are what we eat. When we have a diet full of trans fats and dairy (i.e. pizza, ice cream and doughnuts) it makes our taste buds happy but our skin scream! Both dairy and trans fats cause inflammation and irritation like redness, breakouts and swelling. By filling your diet with more fruits and vegetables containing antioxidants, it can reduce inflammation. Clean eating is happy eating, in more ways than one!

NEVER Go to Bed with Your Make Up on

Hey, I’ve been there myself. It’s been a long day and I can barely change out of my day clothes before crawling into bed, I get it. The struggle is real but the ramifications can be much worse. We have touched on this topic before in another blog but here is a reminder of what can happen when you skip the before bed routine.  Clogged pores, acne, dehydration, skin irritation and even rashes can develop! I know some days are hard but power through that nightly routine and your skin with thank you in the long run.

Don’t Pick!

This one is hard for everyone, especially when that whitehead is staring at you or the scab you think is never going away just needs a little help. Picking can actually cause more inflammation and irritation as well as the spreading of bacteria causing the area to look worse than it did before. It can even increase your chances of scarring or discoloration, leaving a more permanent mark rather than just letting it heal on its own! Stay strong and resist the urge to pick!

Get a Routine that Works for You

Trends come and go in the skincare industry and newer better ingredients pop up all the time. A regimen that works great for a friend may wreak havoc on your skin, not everyone’s skin is the same! See a skin professional to help guide you into a routine that is gentle or aggressive enough for your concerns. Switching from product line to product line frequently can also be part of the problem. You want to give a routine enough time to work before you move on. Remember there is also a chance of purging when you first start a new regimen as it can be cleaning out previous impurities the last routine left behind. Find something your skin loves and stick to it.

I think these rules are realistic expectations for the coming year and a resolution we won’t regret! Remember it’s the small changes that make the biggest difference. As always if you need a skin guru to keep you on your path to flawless skin, we are always here to help!

We at ZONA Med Spa want to make one thing perfectly clear, your skin.

How to Avoid Bruising With Injections

When deciding to get procedures like Botox or Fillers most people want to have little to no bruising post treatment. Even the most experienced and knowledgeable injector can give a client a bruise, redness or bumps after a treatment. However, there are a few pre- and post-treatment tips that can minimize your chances of bruising. Always follow your medical professional’s instructions and be sure to ask any questions you have.

Pre-Treatment

Certain vitamins or over-the-counter medications you take can cause the blood to thin, giving you a greater chance at bruing. Always check with your doctor before stopping medications as they may be needed for medical reasons. The following are supplements to discontinue (if applicable) 5-7 days prior to injections.

  • Aspirin, Excedrin or Ibuprofen (Aleve, Advil) – Tylenol is ok to use if you need a pain medication.
  • St. John’s Wort
  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids
  • Vitamin E (your multivitamin is ok)
  • Ginko Bilboa
  • Ginseng

Besides the list above try to avoid garlic, alcohol, and caffeine a couple days before your treatment as well! You can take Arnica 30c pellets orally (found at Hi Health or Whole Foods) 3 days prior to your treatment to help prevent bruising. Be sure to follow instructions on the label. Consuming Pineapple a few times a day for 1-2 days prior to your treatment can lessen side effects. Bromelain is found in pineapple juice and can naturally help with inflammation and swelling. If you are prone to cold sores around the mouth or near the injection site, be sure to discuss with your medical professional about how to prevent an outbreak. Most likely they will give you a script for an antiviral medication.

During the Treatment

When having an injection treatment such as fillers, we at ZONA Med Spa use a topical numbing cream to help you feel more comfortable. Throughout your treatment the medical professional applies pressure followed by ice to any spots that bleed to ensure a lower chance of bruising.

Post-Treatment

After care for your injection treatment is important. Be sure to follow the instructions given to you by the medical professional. Some common injection related reactions may occur including redness, swelling, tenderness, itching and bruising at the injection site. Here are some general post-care instructions for a smooth recovery. Ice as much as you can for the first 48 hours, 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off several times a day. Apply Arnica gel or cream to injection sites and continue taking Arnica orally for 5 days, following instructions on label. Avoid any exercise, saunas, yoga or hot showers for 48 hours or until swelling resolves. Avoid sleeping on your face, getting facials or massages. Do not wear any tight fitting objects to the area injected such as hats, ski or scuba masks. The duration of post treatment reactions can depend on individual healing characteristics and how aggressive the treatment was.

Results

Remember that it takes time to see full results of a treatment. Injectables such as Botox can take up to two weeks to fully kick in. Filler injectables can take a couple days to see a final result as swelling will reduce and the product has settled in. It is important to have realistic expectations with the results of fillers as they do not “get rid of” all your wrinkles. You can expect “significant improvement” not complete wrinkle removal. Having a consultation with your medical professional may be the best place to start.

10 Products Our Skin is Thankful For

Tis the season to be thankful. As Thanksgiving approaches we can’t help but reflect on the wonderful things and people we are blessed with. Personally I am thankful for many things, one of which is being able to work in an industry that I love! Battling years of acne and of course by working in this industry, my skin has been exposed to a plethora of products. Here are ten products our skin thanks us for using.

Face Wash:

This may seem like a no brainer but let’s be real, our face isn’t going to wash itself! After a long day of being exposed to pollution and free radicals, not to mention being suffocated by foundation, our skin is thankful that we cleanse away those impurities and allow it to breathe again.

Toner:

Not astringent! A proper toner is water based, containing no alcohol. Unlike astringents which are alcohol based and strip our skin of our natural oils leaving the face more dry than before. A toner is like a sip of water to the skin, adding some moisture back while calming and soothing it. Thus leaving our skin thankful for the sweet ‘ahhh’ of soothing comfort.

Exfoliation:

Regardless if it is a scrub, clarisonic or professional treatment, exfoliation allows us to slough off those dry dead skin cells to allow our products to penetrate deeper. As we age our skin cells don’t turn over and shed fast enough like they used to. Thankfully, we are here to help! Without being too aggressive, we are able to maintain healthy skin that is fresh and smooth.

Eye Cream:

The delicate skin around the eyes requires its own cream to treat and prevent dark circles and aging. A great eye cream can improve the appearance of the area, including the upper eyelid. Thus being able to reduce and prevent the appearance of wrinkles and provide intense moisturization for smoother skin texture.  Your skin around the eyes thanks you for not forgetting about them!

Retinol:

Now there are many forms of Retinol as well as different strengths. In some cases like Retinoic Acid, your skin may want to scream instead of thank you as it can be very drying and irritating to the skin. Retinol on the other hand is the most accepted form of Vitamin A that can be absorbed by the skin. It can help brighten, plump and give a smooth texture. Your skin will be thanking you for keeping it youthful!

Nectifirm:

Taking great care of our face is one thing, but we can’t forget about our neck! When your neck looks younger, so do you. This specially formulated neck cream contains five peptides, plant extracts and unique biotechnological blends that work cohesively to create a smoother, firmer, younger-looking neck. Not having a turkey neck will make your skin very thankful this Thanksgiving.

Hyaluronic Acid:

Found naturally beneath the surface, Hyaluronic Acid binds water to the skin and provides short-and long-term moisturization. With the drying effects of winter and living in the desert, Hyaluronic keeps your skin from getting thirsty.

Night Cream:

At night our skin restores and repairs itself. Night creams are typically more emollient and packed with nutrients and peptides to aid in restoring the skin to its best! Your epidermis thanks you for using a hydrating cream to condition it while you sleep after a long day of makeup and pollutants.

Vitamin C:

THD Ascorbate is a stabilized form of Vitamin C. This glorious Vitamin brightens the skin and provides antioxidant benefits. By using the THD Ascorbate form it contains a mixture of oil and water which the skin recognizes and absorbs.

Sunscreen:

Another product that may feel like a no brainer, but some people have yet to jump on the SPF train! Everyday sunscreen protects the skin from accumulation of sun damage. It defends the skin from the harmful UVA and UVB rays. Although you may not get a sunburn from the 20 minutes it takes to get to and from work, the sun is aging your skin and creating possible brown spots. The obvious reason to use this product is to help fight against skin cancer and for that, your skin thanks you! (So does your loved ones, no one likes the c word)

How many of those ten products does your skin thank you for? Not very many? Maybe it is time to switch up the regime and give your skin something to be thankful for. Tomorrow when we stretch our stomachs to fit in massive amounts of glorious foods, take a minute to reflect and be thankful. Thanksgiving is a Holiday that is often brushed over these past few years as the Christmas Holiday just can’t wait its turn. So enjoy your food, friends, and family and have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Must-Have Products: For Healthy, Radiant Skin

As women, we are always on the hunt for the next miracle cream that will help us defy gravity. The war on anti-aging started long ago and we continue to fight every fine line and wrinkle. In case you were unaware, the secret to great skin is a great at home regimen. Seeing your trusted skin care specialist is only part of the solution. Yes, it is still important to be seen on a regular basis to get educated on what products or treatments would be best for you. An excellent home skin care regimen should reinforce the results you get in the treatment room. Here are four of my must-have products for healthy, radiant skin all year long!

DEJ Eye Cream

In previous blogs I have touched on the importance of the Dermal-Epidermal Junction or DEJ. For lack of a long explanation, the DEJ is what holds the youthful structure to our skin. Revision Skincare has made a magnificent product called DEJ Eye Cream that I like to refer to as spanks for the eyes. This new pathway to younger-looking eyes is formulated with many key ingredients, most of which are hard to pronounce. Here are just a couple of key ingredients and the benefits they bring: Leontopodium Alpinium Meristem Cell Culture which is a scientific name for Edelweiss extract that is high in antioxidant content. This wonderful ingredient inhibits the breakdown of collagen and hyaluronic acid which naturally keeps the skin hydrated. Methyl Glucoside Phosphate Proline Lysine Copper Complex (say that 5 times fast) is a very long scientific terminology for an amino acid copper complex. This complex helps to provide energy to tired, aging cells that firms, energizes and re-densifies the skin while increasing elastin synthesis. To sum it all up, DEJ Eye Cream helps with fine lines, upper eyelid appearance, firmness, overall photodamage, tactile smoothness and elasticity!

DEJ Face Cream

Staying with the same importance of the Dermal-Epidermal Junction, this time for the face. This product is newer to the Revision Skincare line, formulated for the face after the DEJ Eye was such a great success! With common key ingredients in both DEJ Face and Eye creams, here are a couple more ingredients that make the DEJ Face Cream beneficial for the skin: Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD) or as most of us know it as Vitamin C. THD is the gold standard when it comes to Vitamin C used in products because it is PH neutral allowing the skin to fully absorb its benefits, unlike Ascorbic Acid. Acetyl Tetrapeptide-2 helps increase elastin synthesis to promote the correct assembly of elastin fibers which is the foundation of the DEJ. In layman’s terms, the DEJ Face Cream helps with clarity and brightness, reduction of redness, hyperpigmentation or brown spots, fine lines, wrinkles and the overall appearance of the skin.

patient 4 subject B

Intellishade Anti-Aging Tinted Moisturizer SPF 45

All of the coverage, sun protection and daily moisture you need in one anti-aging product. I preach about this product to anyone and everyone who will listen. Intellishade comes in both original and matte for us oily skin folks. I personally have been using the matte formula for 5 years now and is the only sunscreen I can put on my face without it breaking me out. Besides the protection and moisturizing aspects, Intellishade uses a blend of three peptides to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. THD Ascorbate or Vitamin C is included in the ingredients list to brighten and provide antioxidant benefits. The matte formula has a proprietary form of Lecithin which is used to reduce the appearance of pore size. A tinted daily moisturizer that protects, corrects and minimizes my pores?! I think it’s clear to see why this is a must-have.

patient 4 subject B

Nectifirm

Last but definitely not least is Revision Skincare’s miracle product for firming the neck and décolletage. The skin on your neck is fragile, like facial skin, yet it’s different. The neck is particularly vulnerable to signs of aging since it tends to be thinner, less moisturized and often overlooked in your daily skin care regimen. This specially formulated neck cream contains plant extracts, antioxidants and unique biotechnological blends that work cohesively to create a smoother, firmer, younger-looking neck. We can’t hide our age with a beautiful firm youthful face and an old crepey neck. Nectifirm uses Dihydromyricetin to reduce the appearance of rough, crepey skin. YeastExtract, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide and Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7 is used to help the skin appear more firm and lifted. Nectifirm is a must-have product because when your neck looks younger, so do you!

patient 4 subject B

Why These Four?

I decided on these four products because of their outstanding ability to give aging a one two punch, but also because I personally use them at home. These four magic creams cover all of your basic needs, eye cream to keep your eyes youthful, lifted and not tired looking. Face cream to fight fine lines and wrinkles as well as overall skin tone. Sunscreen to protect against sun damage and correct current damage all while giving you a nice tinted glow. Neck cream, for the area that gets forgotten until the day we look in the mirror and think it is too late. I’m here to tell you, it’s not. All four of these products happen to be Revision’s top selling products as well, coincidence? No, just facts derived from results. This Holiday season we are pleased to announce The Perfect Gift of Lift. A four piece gift set Including our four favorite must-haves for healthy, radiant skin.

Sunscreen: Answers to Your Burning Questions

Why is Sunscreen Use so Important?

Skin cancer prevention is one of the most important reasons for using sunscreen. In fact there has been 3,500,000 new skin cancer cases in the U.S. alone this year (according to the American Cancer Society 2015). However, some people are still not concerned with this alarming threat of a potentially deadly disease unless they have already had a skin cancer scare themselves. Believe it or not in our society, especially women, we are more concerned about aging from harmful sun rays than getting skin cancer. So how do we protect ourselves from the Sun’s energy to avoid both aging and potential cancer? The sun has four types of energy that reach the earth. Visible light, Infrared radiation or IR, Ultraviolet A radiation or UVA and Ultraviolet B radiation or UVB. Visible light has very minimal effect on the skin and is pretty self-explanatory. Infrared Radiation is the heat we feel from the sunshine, the kind of energy that keeps us warm and feeling so great on a winter day. IR doesn’t burn our skin however it does release an abundance of free radicals which can still make those brown spots and sun damage appear. UVA is the aging radiation, it penetrates the furthest into our skin and is also able to go through clouds and glass. UVB is the burning radiation, meaning it tends to be more superficially damaging than UVA and cause reddening and sun burns in the epidermis (the outer most layer of your skin). While both UVA and UVB can aid in developing cancer, UVB plays a key role since it is the most superficial.

Protection Against the Energy

FDA now requires every sunscreen to be broad-spectrum, meaning protection against both UVA and UVB rays. The following ingredients are FDA approved active ingredients to protect against such radiation: Zinc Oxide which is a physical block and Avobenzone which is a chemical block, both of those ingredients are for protection against UVA. Titanium Dioxide which is a physical block, Octinoxate, Octisalate and Homosalate are all chemical blocks and used for protection against UVB among many others. A true synergy between physical and chemical sunscreens has been shown for better protection. As for protection against the free radicals that the IR gives us, theFDA doesn’t allow companies to advertise IR protection on their sunscreen labels. Antioxidants are the additional ingredients to look for in a sunscreen as it is the protection factor against free radical damage. As Revision Skincare states “It is beneficial to use a blend of antioxidants to neutralize the free radicals from IR.”  To give some examples of antioxidants to look for I will be referencing Revision Skincare’s Multi-Protection Broad-Spectrum SPF 50 and their Intellishade Broad-Spectrum SPF 45. Both of these sunscreens use Green Tea Extract, Coenzyme Q10, Vitamin C and Vitamin E to fight back and protect against the free radical damage.

Are Physical Sunscreens Better than Chemical Sunscreens?

Not necessarily. As stated previously, a union of both physical and chemical sunscreens has been shown for better protection. By mentioning the word chemical when used to describe something we put on our skin can set some people on edge. “Chemical” is instantly thought of as something that is unnatural, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t safe to use. In fact some natural things aren’t as great as they sound either. Arsenic is natural, yet no one considers ingesting that into our bodies! Not all “all-physical” sunscreens are truly all-physical either. The FDA has deemed chemical sunscreen to be safe.

What Sunscreen is Best?

An SPF 45-50 is recommended even for daily wear because it protects the skin for longer. On an average day we head to the office or our jobs and don’t think about reapplying sunscreen unless we are planning on being outside. One should always reapply but the advantage of using a higher SPF is that you wouldn’t have to reapply as often. Definitely a broad-spectrum sunscreen and preferably one with a blend of antioxidants, especially when used for the face is what we would advise. In my personal opinion, I would always recommend the Intellishade Matte or Original. Revision Skincare’s Intellishade not only has SPF 45 but it is also a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a blend of antioxidants as discussed earlier. Besides those already great aspects of this sunscreen, Intellishade also is a tinted moisturizer that moisturizes and blends naturally with the color of your skin. It reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, fights photodamage which causes premature skin aging and the Matte formula contains the latest pore-minimizing technology! Outsmart the signs of aging. Talk with your skin care specialist about starting your Intellishade regimen today.

‘Tis the Season for Pumpkin Everything

Pumpkin Spice Lattes, Pumpkin carving, Pumpkin scented candles, Pumpkin pie, Pumpkin Cheesecake, the options are limitless!  It’s safe to say that we go Pumpkin crazy as soon as fall hits. Besides the many cooking options and delicious taste, Pumpkin is great for the skin too! When fermented, as it is in skin care products, this vegetable contains more than 100 nutrients. It is packed full of protein building amino acids and moisturizing fatty acids among other antioxidants and vitamins to give your skin a refreshed and brightened look. It can benefit all skin types including dull dry skin, oily skin and even mature skin, giving natural results.

Pumpkin Benefits for the Skin

The molecular structure of Pumpkin enzyme is small meaning when applied topically, the product will penetrate deeper giving the skin full use of all the nutrients the enzyme has to offer. This can be especially great for dull, aging and pigmented skin because it naturally contains fruit enzymes and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) to increase cell turnover which brightens and smooths the skin. Pumpkin Seeds are another beneficial ingredient to look out for, especially if you have acne prone skin. Pumpkin Seeds are high in essential fatty acids and Vitamin E, both of which are necessary to maintain great barrier function of the skin and to help regulate sebum or oil. These seeds are also high in Zinc, another key Vitamin because it controls the hormone level and oil production while assisting in healing of the skin.

Polishing Pumpkin Micro Peel

While there are many Pumpkin products to choose from, our favorite here at ZONA Med Spa is ABI’s Polishing Pumpkin Micro Peel.  This professional treatment provides all the benefits of a light peel without any dryness or downtime! As mentioned earlier, Pumpkin and Pumpkin Seed extract is an antioxidant-rich natural enzyme that is rich in vitamins to soften the skin, dissolve dry skin, lighten and brighten, reduce inflammation, control excess oil and prevent skin congestion. Utilizing those power pure ingredients with a concentrated blend of five botanical extracts (bilberry, sugar cane, sugar maple, orange and lemon) promotes smoother and younger looking skin by increasing the rate of cell turnover. Another main ingredient in this peel is Tocopherol (D-alpha) which is known as an antioxidant “superstar” due to its incredible healing and repairing properties and also provides natural protection from damage cause by the sun. Those ingredients alone make for a pretty amazing treatment, but the Polishing Pumpkin Micro Peel has more instore for your skin. This minimal downtime peel includes Glycolic Acid and Vitamin C as active ingredients. Glycolic Acid improves hydration by enhancing moisture intake. It reacts with the upper layer of the epidermis, dissolving the bonds that hold dead skin cells together allowing essential moisture to penetrate the skin. It also helps to increase cellular turnover, refine skin texture and assist in skin lightening. Vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis, improves skin tone and texture, reduces brown spots and decreases the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Benefits of Polishing Pumpkin Micro Peel

  • Increases cell turnover to improve tone and texture
  • Stimulates collagen production
  • Gently and effectively removes impurities, excess oil and dead skin.
  • Helps reduce the appearance of blemishes.
  • Reduces inflammation and the appearance of pores size.

To Sum it All Up

Pumpkin is a remarkable ingredient, not only for pies and lattes but for your skin too. With all of the amazing benefits you’ve got to be wondering why you haven’t jumped on the Pumpkin skin care bandwagon yet. Not only will you breathe in the aroma of fall memories but you will emerge from the treatment room refreshed and rejuvenated.

Peptides: Why Should You Be Using Them

There are a lot of ingredients that go into skin care products, some of which you are familiar with. Most people have heard of retinols and antioxidants, but what about peptides? If you have ever looked at an ingredients list on a cosmetic label you have probably seen words like Methyl Glucoside Phosphate or Acetyl Tetrapeptide-2, but what do these big scientific words mean to our skin?

What are Peptides?

Peptides are an active chain of amino acids that work with proteins to affect how the cells in our body work. On an ingredients list, the words dipeptide or tripeptide refer to how many amino acids are in the chain. For example, dipeptide means it is built with two amino acids, tripeptide is three and so on. Without getting too deep into a chemistry lesson, basically peptides communicate to your cells what your body needs. Whether it’s to build new collagen because the skin was damaged or to nourish the skin with essential nutrients and vitamins. By using these chains of amino acids in products we are able to trick our skin into thinking that it has lost collagen or hydration and needs to produce more.

Dermal Epidermal Junction (DEJ)

The DEJ is what holds the skin together, improving its thickness, firmness and elasticity. It is the area that connects the Epidermis, or outermost layer of the skin, to the Dermis, or innermost layer of the skin. Imagine the skin as a series of chain links. If just one of those links break, elasticity would decline and the skin would start to sag. Keeping the DEJ strong with collagen is what can be boosted by peptides. Infact peptides continue to evolve and are even replacing many controversial active ingredients as effective and healthy alternatives.

What to Look for

Popular peptides to look for in your skin care have more common trade names like Matrixyl. I know what you’re thinking, Matrixyl is not a word you commonly use. However it is easier to pronounce than Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4. Matrixyl is a peptide that is used to stimulate fibroblasts to increase collagen which can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It has a long term effect because it stimulates collagen and skin repair. Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, or Argireline, is another common ingredient to keep an eye out for. This superficial peptide inhibits muscle contraction to reduce appearance of expression lines. Basically Botox in a bottle. When Argireline is applied to the skin it causes the facial muscles to contract with less force therefore improving fine lines and wrinkles. Some may experience a tighter or more firm feeling in the skin. This peptide is only absorbed superficially meaning it’s effects are only short term. Botox is injected deeper into the skin to prevent the muscle movements for much longer.

Products We Love

Revision Skincare is our main skin care line at ZONA Med Spa, infact it is what I personally use at home. “Make the absolute best products that solve a patient’s skin care problems” was John Muller’s mantra, the founder and CEO of Revision Skincare. This line is a medical grade (meaning only sold by physicians) peptide line that utilizes rare ingredients sourced from all over the world. Everything from freshwater silt derived from a natural lake in Latvia to an oil soluble Vitamin C that maximizes benefits without sacrificing product stability. Revision even has a product named DEJ Face and Eye cream to cater to the Dermal Epidermal Junction. At ZONA Med Spa we also use an anti-aging mask in the treatment room that contains both Matrixyl and Argireline. Along with Hyaluronic Acid, all three peptides to help increase hydration, stimulate collagen and lessen movement of facial muscles to fade away fine lines and wrinkles.

Come in and try out these products for yourself! We would love to have you relax while we infuse your skin with peptides and antioxidants to rejuvenate your skin!
